RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS

Signs CBT Therapy Could Help

  • Lying awake at 2 AM with the same worries on loop

  • Avoiding things that used to feel effortless

  • Holding it together outside, running on empty inside

  • Same patterns for years, willpower isn't shifting them

Why this happens

The patterns that once protected you may now be the thing keeping you stuck.

Your brain learned these responses for a reason. CBT gives you the tools to update them.

Grounded in Beck (1979), supported by 2,000+ clinical trials.

THE APPROACH

What Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Works

A structured, skills-based approach that connects how you think, feel, and act; not endless talk, not "just think positive."

01

Recognize

Spot the patterns running quietly in the background.

02

Challenge

Test beliefs against reality; accurately, not optimistically.

03

Build

Practical tools you can use immediately.

04

Create

Lasting change in how you respond to stress.

WHAT MAKES CBT DIFFERENT

◎ CBT is goal-oriented and practical. You'll walk away from each session with clear insights and actionable strategies; real tools for change, not just increased awareness. Unlike open-ended talk therapy, CBT is structured, time-limited, and skill-focused. You'll always know where you are in the process.

THE RESEARCH

Is CBT Effective?
Evidence-Based Results for Calgary Clients

CBT is one of the most studied therapies in the world. The question isn't really whether CBT works, it's whether you'll engage with it.

CBT works when you're willing to show up consistently, practice new strategies between sessions, and challenge old patterns — even when it's uncomfortable. You don't have to be "ready" or "fixed" to start. You just have to be willing to try something different.

An honest note: If you've been struggling with the same patterns for months or years, you already know that willpower alone isn't enough. CBT gives you the structure, support, and tools to actually create change, not just understand why the patterns exist.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT APPROACH

How Is CBT Different from EMDR? (Popular Question)

This is one of the most common questions people ask before starting therapy, and it's a good one. The honest answer is that the right therapy depends less on a label and more on what you're carrying and what kind of support actually fits how you work.

CBT tends to be a strong fit if…

You're dealing with anxiety, overthinking, avoidance, perfectionism, burnout, or low mood

You want a structured approach with clear goals and tools you can use between sessions

You learn well by understanding why something happens and then practicing a different response

You're ready to be an active participant, CBT involves real work outside the therapy room

You want to see measurable progress within a defined timeframe

EMDR may be a better starting point if…

Your current struggles connect to specific past experiences or trauma that still feel raw

You've already tried talk-based therapy and found that insight alone didn't move the needle

Your reactions feel bigger or more physical than the situation seems to call for

Talking through events in detail feels overwhelming or re-traumatizing

Sometimes the answer is both. CBT builds the coping skills and stability that help you function better day-to-day. EMDR addresses the deeper experiences driving those patterns. Many clients at Core Psychology work with both approaches at different points in their journey. Not sure where to start? That's exactly what our free consultation is for. We'll listen to what's going on and help you find the right fit — no pressure, no commitment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in Calgary

How is CBT different from EMDR?

CBT focuses on changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours through structured, skill-based work. EMDR targets the nervous system's response to unresolved trauma. CBT is a strong fit for anxiety, depression, burnout, and perfectionism. EMDR may suit you better if insight-based approaches haven't worked or if your reactions feel disproportionate to situations. Many Core Psychology clients benefit from both at different points.

How do I know if CBT or a different therapy is right for me?

CBT tends to be a strong fit if you're dealing with anxiety, overthinking, avoidance, burnout, or perfectionism, and you want a structured, skills-focused approach. EMDR may be a better starting point if past experiences still feel unresolved or if talk-based therapy hasn't moved the needle. Not sure? Our free consultation is exactly for this, no pressure, just an honest conversation about what fits.

Will I have homework between sessions?

Often, yes, and this is actually a key reason CBT works so well. Between-session practice might look like journaling, trying out a new coping skill, or noticing specific thought patterns in daily life. These exercises are adapted to your comfort level and meant to support you, not overwhelm you.

How many CBT sessions will I need?

Most clients begin noticing meaningful change within 6 to 12 sessions. Anxiety and specific phobias often respond in fewer. More complex patterns; perfectionism, relationship difficulties, chronic burnout. typically benefit from 12 to 20 sessions. CBT is time-limited by design, so you'll always know where you are.

Can CBT be done online?

Yes, and it works very well. Core Psychology offers secure, confidential online sessions throughout Alberta, including rural communities. Many clients find online therapy especially valuable because it gives them access to specialized care without the need for travel. All you need is a private space and a stable internet connection.

Do I need a referral to start CBT at Core Psychology?

No referral is required. You can contact us directly to book. While some clients are referred by their family doctor or another professional, you are welcome to reach out on your own at any time.

What happens during a CBT session?

A CBT session typically runs 50 or 80 minutes and follows a structured format. You and your therapist will review what's happened since your last session, work through a specific thought pattern or behavioural challenge, and practice a concrete skill before you leave. Sessions are collaborative, and the agenda is always set together.

Is CBT covered by insurance or extended health benefits?

Yes. In Alberta, CBT provided by a Registered Psychologist or Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) is covered under most employer group benefit plans. Before your first appointment, contact your insurer to confirm your annual maximum and whether a referral is required. No doctor referral is needed to book with us.

What is the difference between CBT and DBT?

CBT focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) was developed from CBT and adds specific skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. CBT tends to be the stronger fit for anxiety, depression, perfectionism, and burnout; DBT is often recommended for intense emotional reactions or significant difficulty in relationships.

Can CBT be combined with medication?

Yes. Many people use CBT alongside medication, and research supports the combination as more effective than either approach alone for conditions like depression and anxiety. Medication can reduce the intensity of symptoms enough to make it easier to engage with the skill-building work of CBT. With your permission, your therapist will work alongside your prescribing physician.
