THE RESEARCHIs CBT Effective?
Evidence-Based Results for Calgary Clients
CBT works when you're willing to show up consistently, practice new strategies between sessions, and challenge old patterns, even when it's uncomfortable. You don't have to be "ready" or "fixed" to start. You just have to be willing to try something different.
An honest note: If you've been struggling with the same patterns for months or years, you already know that willpower alone isn't enough. CBT gives you the structure, support, and tools to actually create change, not just understand why the patterns exist.
✓ Show up consistently, even on hard weeks
✓ Practice new strategies between sessions (small, doable steps)
✓ Challenge old patterns, even when it's uncomfortable
✓ Be honest with your therapist about what's working and what isn't

THE APPROACHHow Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Works
A structured, skills-based approach that connects how you think, feel, and act; not endless talk, not "just think positive."
01
Recognize
Spot the patterns running quietly in the background.
02
Challenge
Test beliefs against reality; accurately, not optimistically.
03
Build
Practical tools you can use immediately.
04
Create
Lasting change in how you respond to stress.
WHAT MAKES CBT DIFFERENT◎ CBT is goal-oriented and practical. You'll walk away from each session with clear insights and actionable strategies; real tools for change, not just increased awareness. Unlike open-ended talk therapy, CBT is structured, time-limited, and skill-focused. You'll always know where you are in the process.
YOUR PATH FORWARDWhat to Expect from CBT Sessions
CBT is structured by design, so you'll always have a clear sense of where you are and what you're working toward.
SESSION 1Understanding You
Get clear on what's happening and what you want instead.
SESSION 2-4Building New Patterns
Actively work on the thoughts and behaviours driving your experience.
SESSION 5+Integration & Resilience
Real, meaningful shifts in how you feel and function day-to-day.
ACCESSIBILITYConvenience and accessibility matter. In order to best support you we offer CBT in two ways; same evidence-based care, same quality of therapist, wherever you are.

-
CBT can be a good fit if you find yourself caught in the same patterns of thinking or responding, even when you know they aren’t helping. It’s often helpful for anxiety, overthinking, perfectionism, low mood, stress, and burnout.
It isn’t the right approach for everyone. Part of our job is helping you understand what’s going on and determine which approach makes the most sense for you.
-
CBT is collaborative and fairly practical. You and your therapist will look at what’s happening in your life, identify patterns that may be contributing to how you’re feeling, and work together on ways to respond differently.
Sessions have some structure, but they shouldn’t feel scripted. Quality CBT is adapted to the person sitting in the room.
-
There isn’t one number that applies to everyone. Some people notice meaningful changes within a relatively small number of sessions, while more longstanding or complex concerns may take longer.
Your therapist will talk with you about what you’re working toward and regularly check in about whether therapy is helping. CBT should have a purpose and a direction, not simply continue indefinitely.
-
Sometimes, but we tend to think of it more as practising between sessions than traditional homework.
That might mean noticing a particular pattern, trying something differently, or practising a skill you’ve worked on together. The goal isn’t to give you another thing to get done. It’s to help what happens in therapy translate into your actual life.

Often, yes. Coverage depends on your individual benefits plan and the credentials of the therapist you work with.
Many plans cover services provided by Registered Psychologists, and some also cover Canadian Certified Counsellors. We recommend checking your plan before your first appointment so you know exactly what your coverage includes.
