Free grief reflection: Grief waves
Grief often comes in waves. Some days feel steadier, and then a song, a date or a familiar place brings it rushing back. This reflection helps you notice what tends to bring grief up, what helps when it does, and how to plan gently for the harder days ahead.
HOW IT WORKS
- 01Notice what tends to bring waves of grief
- 02Name what helps you get through a wave, and what you need from others
- 03Plan gently for anniversaries, holidays and other hard dates
Private: you can type right on this page. Nothing you enter is saved or sent.
There’s no right way to grieve. Waves of grief are a normal part of loss, not a sign you’re going backwards. Take this at your own pace and skip anything that doesn’t fit. If grief brings thoughts of not wanting to be here, call or text 988 any time.
01 · What brings the waves
Notice what tends to bring grief up.
Tick any that fit, and add your own.
02 · When a wave comes
Getting through, rather than getting over.
Tick what has helped before, or what you’d like to try.
03 · Planning for hard dates
Hard days are easier with a plan.
Anniversaries, birthdays and holidays can bring strong waves, including the days leading up to them. A little planning can help.
04 · Carrying the connection
Love doesn’t end with loss.
Informed by grief research, including the dual process model of coping with bereavement (Stroebe & Schut, 1999, Death Studies), which describes healthy grieving as moving between facing the loss and taking breaks from it. This reflection is educational and not a substitute for professional care.
You don’t have to carry this alone.
If grief still feels as heavy as it did at the start, or it’s making daily life hard, talking with a grief counsellor can help. You’re welcome to bring this reflection to your first session.
