The four skills we train

Confidence, focus, pressure and reset

  • CONFIDENCETrusting their ability, not just their last performance
  • FOCUSStaying in the moment when it counts
  • PRESSUREStaying steady when the stakes go up
  • RESETLetting go of a mistake and getting back in the game

01 · Does this sound familiar?

Great in practice. Different in games.

  • Plays well in practice but struggles to show it in games
  • Can’t let go of a mistake
  • Overthinks or hesitates as the pressure rises
  • Confidence rises and falls with the last performance
  • Gets frustrated, or shuts down
  • Wants to strengthen the mental side of their game

These are common, even for talented, hard-working athletes. Handling pressure is a skill that can be learned and practised.

02 · What we work on

Strength and conditioning, from the inside out.

Athletes train strength, speed, skill and technique. But a mistake can get them stuck, their body tightens, and they overthink, hesitate or shut down. Together, we help your athlete:

  • Build confidenceAnd the emotional resilience to keep going on hard days
  • Bounce backReset after a mistake instead of carrying it into the next play
  • Manage pressureBig games, tryouts, selection and expectations
  • Sharpen focusPay attention to what matters, in the moment
  • Navigate team dynamicsCoaches, teammates, roles and playing time
  • Trust their abilityLet their training show up when it counts

03 · How we help

Approaches used in Mindset Mastery

Mental skills can be trained, just like strength and speed.

I

Sport psychology skills

Goal setting, self-talk, imagery and pre-performance routines, adapted to your athlete’s sport.

II

CBT & ACT

Work with the thoughts and feelings that get in the way, and refocus on what matters to them.

III

Regulation under pressure

Breathing and body-based tools to stay steady before and during competition.

IV

Reset routines

A simple, practised plan for moving on from mistakes in the moment.

V

Room to talk

Because Jesse is a psychologist, there’s also space to work through experiences that may be holding your athlete back, if and when that feels relevant.

The research is encouraging. When researchers combined the results of 35 studies, athletes who trained their mental skills performed better, on average, than those who didn’t. That’s why we focus on practical skills your athlete can keep using long after our sessions end. Source: Brown & Fletcher, 2017, Sports Medicine.

How is this different from therapy?

Mindset Mastery is mental skills coaching focused on athletic performance: confidence, focus, emotional regulation and resilience. It isn’t focused on treating a mental health condition. Because it’s provided by a psychologist, your athlete also has space to talk through experiences or challenges that may be getting in their way, if and when that feels relevant.

Does my child need to be struggling to benefit?

Not at all. Many athletes we work with are healthy, competitive and doing well in their sport. They come for an extra mental edge, more confidence, sharper focus and resilience that carries into the rest of life.

What if my athlete is nervous about starting?

That’s completely normal. The first session is about building trust and understanding their goals. We keep sessions engaging and interactive, so they feel comfortable and ready to dive in.

What sports do you work with?

Any sport, from team sports like hockey, soccer, basketball and volleyball, to individual sports like gymnastics, skating, swimming and track.

Can sessions be online?

Yes. Sessions are available in person in Marda Loop or online. We’ll talk with you about which format fits your athlete best.

Will my benefits cover sessions?

Many extended health plans cover psychological services, including sessions with a Registered Provisional Psychologist, but coverage varies. Check with your plan before you start, and see our fees page.

What if my athlete needs help right now?

If your child is in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 any time, or call 911. Kids Help Phone is also available any time at 1-800-668-6868, or by texting CONNECT to 686868.

Help your athlete trust their training.

If you’d like, start with a complimentary 15-minute consultation with Jesse to talk about your athlete and their goals, or book a session directly. We’re happy to answer your questions.
